Stay on Target

On July 21st at 1:46 PM EDT, Joe Biden announced that he would not be seeking reelection.

A letter from President Biden

Roughly 30 minutes later, he also announced that he offered his "full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee" for the Democratic party.

My heart leapt into my throat for a moment. Did Biden really just endorse Kamala Harris without allowing any other candidates to throw their hats into the ring? This could really throw the Democratic party into chaos if there were any objections! To my relief, all of the other potential candidates quickly endorsed Kamala Harris as well. Furthermore, the voters all seemed ecstatic about the idea, and I really heard no objections whatsoever. (Well... no objections from Democrats, at least. Just as predicted, MAGA immediately concocted some legal challenges to prevent the change.)

The last several days have played out better than any of us could have imagined. That being said, I have seen us commit a few unforced errors that could come back to haunt us. Specifically:

  1. Many people are still in disbelief about the assassination attempt against Trump, and some Democrats have started spreading conspiracy theories around this. We need to cut this out immediately. MAGA has already shown us what happens when people plunge into conspiratorial rabbit holes, and it's not good.
  2. Some Democrats have started sharing memes about JD Vance and couches. These memes are very distasteful and dishonest. What's the point of defeating MAGA's deceit if we're just going to replace it with deceit of our own? We have plenty of factual reasons to oppose the MAGA party, so let's stick to those, please!

Recently, there has also been some controversy around Trump's speech at a Turning Point USA event. Democrats are pointing at it and claiming that it is evidence that Trump is going to end democracy. This is a legitimate concern, but I think he was actually delivering a coded message directly to his Christian base. Roughly translated, he was proposing a bargain: "If you vote me into power, then I will finally relieve your psychological torment.".

Anyway, I'll need to provide a lot of additional background information before I can explain what I mean. I'll try to tackle that in an upcoming post. In the meantime: good night!
